Opus helps Coach Justin create professionally-looking shorts in half the time
Rebecca Xu
Hey Justin, thanks for your time today. Can you first introduce yourself?
Absolutely. My name is Justin Furtado. I go by Coach Fertado on the internet. I have a YouTube channel called Coach Furtado TV. I am a basketball trainer here in Los Angeles, California. I have in-person training, and on the side I'm also building an app, an online course to expand my reach and serve more people across the United States in terms of basketball. Aside from that, I also teach basketball leadership with my brand called Bridging Impact Basketball. The purpose is to teach life principles that stick with athletes that go well beyond, because only 1% of athletes really play professionally, and most of us end up coaching or having other jobs.
When did you start your YouTube channel and when did you start to make short videos?I
started my YouTube channel around 2019. But I didn't really start taking it seriously until my buddy got me into it last May. He told me YouTube shorts was a thing, so I got into it. I'm recognizing the opportunity short videos have for providing value, and maybe someone likes my videos and how I train people, and they will book my remote coaching. This is definitely an opportunity and I'm figuring out a better system.
"I follow a basketball trainer online who uses Final Cut Pro to edit his videos, and the videos Opus creates look like his videos."
Aside from thought leadership and lead generation, what other benefits have short videos given you?
For small YouTubers like myself, short videos boost our posts more significantly than a long form video. If I'm able to do that consistently, I can then have more impact in the long term. The shorts are a nice hook.
How did you first find out about OpusClip?
It's kind of funny. I was going to someone's podcast for an interview. We did a 30-minute intro call, and he said "Yo dude, you gotta use this OpusClip", and he showed me the platform. I was very surprised. One of the things that's hard for me is that there are only X amount of hours in a day, and during the day, I have to do coaching, administration, and other things. Opus can really help me save time and also look professional. So basically, I got a referral from someone who is in similar fields of work as me, and I decided to take a jump at it.
How long have you been using Opus?
Maybe a month and a half. So pretty new.
Before Opus, how long did it take you to create short videos?
I used CapCut before. I'd say the hardest thing with that is, it took more time, and the text just does not look as good and professional. It used to take me like two hours to create shorts, and now it probably takes me an hour. I would open up 6 Opus tabs and upload my videos. I'm always looking at how I can be more efficient.
"Opus saves time and creates professionally-looking videos. These are the two biggest values for me."
Have seen any good impact that OpusClip has brought to you?
I've definitely seen more views on my personal Instagram page. Time saving is a huge benefit for me. It's probably saving me at least an hour every week.
The short videos just look more professional, to be honest. I follow a basketball trainer online who uses Final Cut Pro to edit his videos, and the videos Opus creates look like his videos. I tried to learn Final Cut Pro, but the time it takes me to learn is more than I want to give. So having software like Opus where I don't have to learn how to cut things up is incredibly helpful.
What is the biggest value that OpusClip has brought to you?
Opus saves time and creates professionally-looking videos. These are the two biggest values for me.In terms of professional videos, I'm in the service business, and people have to see my service to trust me and want to work with me, whether it's remote coaching or in-person training. If I can put out a professionally-looking video faster, then it can give me more time to call parents and do other marketing activities, which means that I'm able to get more leads. A few of my highest paying clients are from my Instagram Reels. And now with Opus, I'm able to pump out 5 reels a week in half of the time it took me to create three reels in the past. It's really helpful.
Can you share your secret sauce for continued growth on social media?
I've been creating content since 2019, when I sucked at it. So I think it's really just practice and consistency. You need to understand the science behind what a good video is. For me, I would go study videos from great trainers that always have a great hook. If your video doesn't have a great hook, it doesn't matter how good your content is. So that's one of the biggest things that I've realized in the past year. And then just storytelling techniques. I think one of most important things is that, there can't really be any dead air for shorts. For instance, in a basketball video, rather than just me talking for the whole 30 seconds, it's really helpful if every six or seven seconds it jumps to something else. Jump cuts definitely keep people engage.
